MEDICAL LEAD
The Medical Lead, ideally an emergency physician, is responsible for managing and supervising the Medical Team and the overall wellness of CAN-TF2. The position includes developing the medical team; and overseeing the medical function of the team pre and post deployment and during operations. The Medical Lead will work closely with the Safety Officer to reduce the potential for injury and illness at all incidents, regardless of event size. The Medical Lead reports directly to the Logistics Chief.
The duties of the Medical Lead are:
- Oversee health and wellness of the Task Force Team. This includes personnel and canine wellness at the assembly point, in transit, at layover sites and in the operational area;
- Oversee coordination and supervision of all medical activities;
- Directly supervise Medical Specialists and ensure adherence to all safety procedures;
- Provide situation reports, maintain records and prepare performance evaluations;
- Responsible for the determination of medical organizational and logistical needs;
- In cooperation with the Safety Officer, investigate, complete and forward all reports regarding Task Force personnel injuries and illnesses to the appropriate organization;
- Responsible for development and implementation of the incident medical action plan;
- Receive briefings and situation reports and ensure that all medical personnel are updated with status changes;
- Perform additional tasks or duties as assigned.
Skills Required
- Must be a currently licensed physician who is trained emergency medicine, certified and actively practicing clinical emergency medicine and have experience and interest with pre-hospital medical care.
OR
- Must be a currently licensed physician with current ACLS, ITLS, and PALS certification (or equivalent) whose day-to-day medical activities include regular and substantial clinical emergency medicine and pre-hospital medical care at a high level of acuity
- Must have a general knowledge and understanding of medical conditions common to HUSAR incidents such as lacerations, fractures, shock, crush injury and crush syndrome, burns, penetrating, amputations and blunt trauma, head injuries, respiratory, hyper/hypothermia and infections;
- Must have the ability to manage a group of individuals within the incident command structure;
- Must have sufficient skills to develop a written or verbal report on the medical plan for the operation;
- Must be capable of improvising and functioning for long hours under adverse conditions with limited equipment and assistance;
- Must be aware of the signs, symptoms and corrective measures of critical incident stress syndrome;
- Must possess good interagency coordination skills; work well with technical experts, local officials, and other organizations;
- Must be able to manage assigned personnel, specialized equipment, and support resources during a disaster situation;
- Must feel comfortable working in confined spaces and at heights.
Skills Desired
- NFPA or equivalent training in any of the following courses:
- Confined Space Rescue
- Rope Rescue
- Swift Water Rescue
- Trench Rescue
- Fire Officer
- Safety Officer
- Critical Incident Stress
- Hazardous Material Training;
- Official training in Incident Command System (ICS 100, ICS 200 etc...);
- Previous management experience in emergency response or military;
- Knowledge of applicable WH&S regulations and NFPA standards including, but not limited to, respiratory, head, foot, hand, eye, and face protection;
- Knowledge of the principles of risk management;
- Knowledge of proper accident investigation techniques and considerations;
- An awareness of public health and industrial hygiene considerations;
- Knowledge/experience/interest in air medical transport;
- Willingness to undertake training in any areas as above.
