SPECIALIST, ENGINEER

The Structural Engineer is responsible for performing various structural assessments for the team during incident operations. The Structural Engineer reports to the Support Team Manager. This individual must meet all the general requirements for members of CANTF2 (refer to General Requirements section).

The duties of the Structural Engineer are:

  • Establish appropriate liaison with other internal agencies/organizations and officials throughout the incident site;
  • Responsible for evaluating immediate structural condition of the area to be entered at the rescue site during team incident operations;
  • Responsible for determining the appropriate type and amount of structural mitigation in order to minimize risks on site to team personnel;
  • Responsible for cooperating and assisting other search and rescue resources;
  • Able to give briefings to the different managers associated with the team;
  • Provide situation reports, maintain records and reports;
  • Performs additional tasks or duties as assigned.

Skills Required

  • Must be a current member in good standing of the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists, and Geo physicists of Alberta (APEGGA);
  • Must be a civil engineer with field experience;
  • Knowledge and understanding in wood, metal, and concrete construction types;
  • Ability to function within the incident command structure;
  • Must have sufficient skills to develop a written or verbal report on the buildings and or structures in question;
  • Must be able to function in a confined space and or at height;
  • Must be able to deploy by ground or air (fixed and rotary wing);

Skills Desired

  • Official Training in Incident command (IS 100, IS 200 etc...)
  • Forensic engineering qualifications;
  • NFPA or equivalent training in any of the following courses:
    • Confined Space Rescue
    • Structural Collapse Technician
    • Rope Rescue
    • Swift Water Rescue
    • Trench Rescue
    • Fire Officer
    • Safety Officer
    • Critical Incident Stress
    • Hazardous Material Training;
  • Previous experience in the use of a SCBA/SABA;
  • Previous experience in emergency response or military.
